Get Warm Under The 8 Best Wool Blankets

Have you ever gotten just a little too chilly when you're out in the wilderness? Have you ever wished you had stocked up on something to keep you warm? Maybe you already have a wool blanket you take camping, and it's time for an upgrade. Any way you slice it, we know you're in the market for the best wool blankets you can get your hands on.

But where do you even start when it comes to finding the best wool blankets? Not only do the prices and quality wildly vary, but there's no telling how they'll do when you're out camping unless someone tells you how they hold up, or you test them yourself. So why should you be looking for a wool blanket?

Wool blankets are typically nice and warm, sure, but are there any other perks to picking out the best wool blankets and sticking with them? For starters, let's go with the obvious. Wool is insulating, meaning it can trap body heat inside the bedding where it can keep you nice and toasty.

Wool can be cooling, as well. It reduces humidity by absorbing any sweat into the fibers and then allows it to evaporate into the air.

Another perk is that wool is fire protective without the need for any extra chemicals. And even if the wool happens to catch fire, it doesn't release as many toxic fumes into the air.

And finally, wool is elastic and strong, making for some very durable blankets for you to take camping with you. So if you happen to come across some holes in your blankets, that's due to moths, not the stress the blanket may be under.

Choosing the Best Wool Blankets

But before you run out and order a new wool blanket for your camping trip, make sure you and anybody you're camping with don't have a wool allergy. The way to distinguish allergies from sensitivity is to look for some telltale signs:

  • Cough
  • Irritated eyes
  • Itchy skin and rashes
  • Runny nose

These symptoms will come to light when the wool blanket comes into contact with someone's skin, if the allergy is present. If you're allergic to wool, there's no need to fret. There are other options to keep you warm.

Another golden rule to keep in mind is to make sure you're getting a good, quality blanket. Make sure your wool blanket is adequately made with real wool, and won't fall apart after the first wash. Because after all, you're here for the best wool blankets you can find.

And finally, remember to check the care instructions on your blanket. Make sure you know whether or not it's machine washable and dry-able. It just might save your blanket.

This blanket is machine washable, flame-retardant, and made up of 20 percent hypoallergenic synthetic fibers. But the wool isn't always greener on the other side.

While there are some great perks, the downsides can pose a real pain in the aftermath. Quite a few customers complained of a chemical odor, despite the fact that the seller claims there are no additional chemicals added to the blanket. The second major downside was the shedding. Oh, the shedding.

They claim there's no itching or scratching of any kind, no shedding, and no odor. We don't know about you, but that sounds pretty good to us. The only complaint we could find was that some people wished the blanket was thicker. Other than that, this blanket was golden. Or, yellow, rather.

And before you say anything, no, there aren't any added fire retardants in this blanket. And finally, the icing on the wooly cake. This blanket is machine-washable.

And as for the negatives? There were a large number of complaints about the smell that was described as awful and toxic-smelling upon unpackaging it. There was also an oily substance that a few people encountered.

This next blanket coming up has a super cute name. Make way for the Woolly Mammoth Woolen Co. Wool blanket. This blanket is made with 80 percent virgin Merino wool and 20 percent nylon/polyester blend with some added acrylic for added durability.

However, these blankets pose a pain to wash, as they're dry-clean only. But that may be something you can gloss over, given the glowing reviews. Users love the softness, the durability, and the overall quality of the blanket.

But the downsides are hard to ignore. From what we were able to gather, the blankets tended to either have a smell or to appear to have sloppy craftsmanship. Others said it was just okay for a wool blanket, and that was that.

While you may not be able to wrap yourself up to sleep in this, it’ll definitely keep you cozy sitting by your campfire or in your tent.

This quaint little blanket barely has any negative reviews, and the only downsides we could find are how the blanket tends to pill. Everyone else that ended up with this blanket was comfy and cozy wherever they used it.

And for every five of these blankets sold, the company gives one to charities. These donated blankets will end up going to homeless shelters and disaster relief organizations all around the world.

But, like other blankets, nothing is perfect. The downsides are minimal at best, with the main complaints being a smell that refused to budge, and the shedding that was at an all-time high.

  • Dry clean only

This next blanket for all your camping needs is the Stansport Heavy Weight Wool Blanket. This bad boy is 55 percent wool and 45 percent polyester and made with camping in mind — though it’s dry clean only. But it’s still a useful blanket nonetheless.

This blanket, according to consumer reports, is long-lasting and gets the job done. After opening, some people put them out in the sun and their packaging smell was gone for good, and they were ready to use. This is one of the best wool blankets out there if you're looking for something heavy and warm. It was even a useful substitute for a sleeping bag in some cases!

But as far as the negatives go, we're afraid they may outweigh the good. But that's really for you to decide. It seems that with wool comes a gasoline smell: No matter how many times people washed it, the smell just didn't let up. However, keep in mind that this blanket is dry-clean only!
